DISSERTATION/ PROJECT WORK

A dissertation is a research project completed as part of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Typically, a dissertation allows students present their findings in response to a question or proposition that they choose themselves.

The aim of the project work is to test the independent research skills students have acquired during their time at university, with the assessment used to help determine their final grade. Although there is usually some guidance from your tutors, the dissertation project is largely independent.

To acquire Undergraduate degree of engineering skills and to translate original ideas into a working reality, project work is carried out in two phases. The seventh semester offers an opportunity for learners to apply their knowledge gained during the programme to a real-world like complex project. To execute the project work; all Laboratories are available with all facilities.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Experiential learning is, quite simply, learning by doing. We have all learned to walk or talk, not by being shown or told, but by practicing and refining our technique. Consequently, trainers and facilitators can implement this method in all sorts of situations with people from all walks of life. There are no barriers due to age, education, experience, ability, background or culture.

VIRTUAL LAB

Virtual laboratories (or virtual labs for short) are a great way for learners to practice in a safe, online environment. Through virtual science lab games and engineering simulation software, learners can interact with elements, machines, and interfaces before or instead of trying them out in real life.

Virtual labs have many applications in educational as well as business environments. In this article, we will shed light on them and help you determine when and how to use virtual laboratories in your eLearning courses.

Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Laboratory:

Water networks and drainage channels are considered as one of the most important infrastructure component for any city/ civilization. The hydraulics subject is focusing on that side of infrastructure requirements; the hydraulics laboratory in the civil engineering department is fully equipped with all the facilities, which always facilitated to be in the services of society for the use of water for domestic, commercial and agricultural purposes through supply networks and drainage channels.

In hydraulics laboratory there is a range of experimental set-ups through which students are given a very good demonstration to understand the various methods of measurement of flow rates, capacity & velocity of water in tanks, closed pipes and open channels. In addition, in this laboratory, students get an experience to understand the fluid properties like surface tension, temperature, viscosity and they get a practical experience of measurement of these properties, which are very important for the selection of pumps, pipes and its specifications like material, size & slope. It is quite useful for design of drainage channels and open channel.

In Hydraulics laboratory, we use to find and verify the difference between the theoretical calculations and actual quantities of flow and its parameters in a pipe network or open channels. By using the experimental set-ups like losses through closed pipes, flow through orifice meter, flow through venturimeter or flow in open channels, we get the coefficient of various parameters like discharge, velocity etc. These coefficients represent a realistic relationship between theoretical calculations and actual observations, which ultimately enables us to find an accurate and appropriate estimate of parameters like flow rate, capacity, velocity, pressure, slope etc. to calculate the required dimensions and hydraulic specifications for the desired application of civilian and non-civilian purposes/projects.

Surveying Lab is very beneficial in the laboratory as it improves the technical aspect of students and clears all doubts of practical based knowledge.

  • First in Chain surveying we measure the length from one point to the other point and make close figure to measure the area of land. It is advantageous for measuring in plane surfaces.
  • Compass surveying is a way of marking points on a land and measuring the distance between them when to make a close figure. The benefit of compass surveying is that it can be done simply using a normal compass.
  • Leveling which is done with the help of Dumpy level is very good for the students to learn the difference in the elevation of surfaces and the irregularities in surface which will help them to have a good idea while making a project.
  • In Theodolite surveying we measure the angles of inclination and declination and measure the length between the object and the instrument which help us to calculate the height of the object. It is beneficial as it can used anyplace without any hesitation.
  • Plane table surveying it is beneficial as in this we do not have to measure the boundary of site but marking some points and intersecting by moving the station a little bit will not only give the boundary but the measurement also.
  • GPS surveying is used nowadays are very often used and doing it on labs give us a good idea of field work and gives us a good information of technology. In this we have to take the GPS device in our hand and had to walk around the plane which we have to measure the area and it gives the leveling of the plane.
  • Total Station a device used to measure, level, angle finding, etc. It is now used in field work as it reduces the carrying other instruments and it's a digital instrument which measures accurately. It is beneficial for students to have total station in lab it gives them a good understanding of how to use the device in surveying purposes.

MAT LABS

MATLAB is a programming language which empowers you to compose codes for extremely complex calculations. There are such a significant number of zones in structural designing which includes loads of calculations identifying with grids, conditions and complex capacities. Also, it is hard to fathom such calculations utilizing C, C++ codes(i.e. composing codes in typical programming dialects is relatively hard and tedious). Here MATLAB demonstrates to be helpful. Extraordinarily in water supply designing and auxiliary elements, we have bunches of complex counts, higher request differential conditions and conditions of higher degrees, there MATLAB can be utilized in all respects productively. No doubt about it learn MATLAB, it will be generally excellent. At long last, I would state that base knowing nuts and bolts of MATLAB is exceptionally basic for a structural architect.

Some important uses of MATLAB in civil engineering
  • Transportation Engineering: Traffic Engineering is commonly done on Excel. In any case, on the off chance that you can utilize Matlab your work become significantly increasingly simpler.
  • Geotechnical Engineering: Lateral earth Pressure, Retaining wall programming, westergaard and boisennesq pressure program, solidification. Mohr circle is one of the most popular programming.
  • Surveying: Leveling program, Bearing computation
  • Structural Engineering: Finite element analysis. Picking up programming of staad Pro, e tabs, should be possible by Matlab.
